Why You Should Banish the Spreadsheet

Posted by Daragh O’Brien on Feb 22, 2017 10:30:00 AM

There is an old saying that if all you have is a hammer, every problem starts to look a lot like a nail. The humble electronic spreadsheet has been with us since shortly after breakfast on the morning of modern computing, with LANPAR providing spreadsheet capability to users of large mainframe computers as far back as 1969. Visicalc was the software that launched a thousand Macs, and helped a small start-up tech company with a fruit-based name climb out of their garage and become the behemoth they are today.

What Every Organization Needs To Know About Data Ownership

Posted by Daragh O’Brien on Feb 2, 2017 10:30:00 AM

In previous blogs for Advanced Metadata, I have discussed metadata and why it matters, as well as how data management relates to regulation and compliance. In both, I was able to draw parallels with historical examples, but as in my last article on the changing landscape of compliance, I here deal with a problem that, though we have always faced it in some respect, has become very much a modern-day dilemma: data ownership.

The Changing Landscape of Regulation & Compliance: How Organizations Can Keep Pace

Posted by Daragh O’Brien on Jan 19, 2017 10:06:22 AM

As organisations begin to wake up to the power and value of the information they can and do process on a day-to-day basis, there is a parallel evolution of regulatory responses and compliance requirements. However, law and regulation always lags behind the evolution of technology, and the potential upsides of new tools are often sold without adequate consideration of potential downsides.

How Data Management Relates to Regulation and Compliance

Posted by Daragh O’Brien on Jan 11, 2017 11:15:00 AM

In my last blog for Advanced Metadata, I wrote about how metadata encodes meaning and context, and lets us know what the drawings on the walls of our enterprise caves… sorry: what the status reports and figures in our Enterprise Performance Scorecards mean.

What is Metadata (And Why Does It Matter)?

Posted by Daragh O’Brien on Jan 5, 2017 5:23:02 PM

Metadata has been with us since the first human used charcoal from their campfire and placed the mark of their hand on the wall of their prehistoric cave. The only problem is that as time has gone by, we can’t be sure exactly what these symbols meant.

Defining Irony: How the NSA made ‘metadata’ mainstream with an incorrect definition

What is metadata? All too often when I ask this question of technologist colleagues I get bombarded with an array of definitions, the only unifying characteristic of which is that they fail to evoke relevance for me from a busy business manager’s perspective.

“Metadata is data about data,” I’m told. “Metadata is data that provides information about other data.” I chortle at this because one of the overlaps between my legal training and my years of experience in data modelling is that it is always an error to define something with reference to itself, and these definitions sound very recursive. Also, this definition causes those of us who are not information-centric or technology-biased thinkers to switch off. Data is the job of the IT department after all, right?

Five Key Reasons why ‘the Business’ should care about Metadata

Posted by Daragh O’Brien on Apr 13, 2016 12:38:00 PM

“Metadata” is a much abused term that entered the mainstream vocabulary in recent years through the revelations about mass surveillance by agencies such as GCHQ and the NSA. Unfortunately, much of the data that was labelled ‘metadata’ in media commentary on surveillance isn’t – it’s actual data recording the fact of a phone call or an email.
